How Are Cutting Mats Made?

Cutting mats are often some of the most important pieces of kit in the arsenal of any crafter.  Strong, sturdy, and perfect for measuring on and cutting onto, they are reliable and will last years of regular arts and crafts.

But how much do we actually know about cutting mats? Many of us take them for granted without ever really thinking about how they come into being!

The answer to this common riddle isn’t actually that difficult to find. Read on, and we will fill you in on what you can expect from your sturdy and reliable cutting mat.

Solid Plastic Mats

At the most basic level, cutting mats are made from extremely tough, resilient plastic. These plastic surfaces are specifically manufactured to ensure that, no matter how hard you cut into an object, and no matter how much support you may need along the way, they will always be on hand to give you something to lean on.

Factories and manufacturers who produce cutting mats stringently test their products. You will normally find that the most common, or toughest mats for cutting are made from a polyethene structure. This means that there are more molecules than ever binding together to create the perfect, robust plastic surface.

However, there are other cutting mat options out there which self-heal. But what exactly does this mean, and how can they help you when working on various arts and crafts projects?

Self-Healing Mats

Many plastic cutting mats self-heal, which means that if you scratch or groove them, they will effectively regenerate over time! This means that you get a lot of extra use out of your mat for a great value price.

These types of cutting mats are normally made from various types of plastic. Often, you will find that the middle or core of your mat is made from hard plastic, you will find in those discussed above. On the top and bottom of your mat, you will normally find a more flexible vinyl surface.

According to experts, it is these vinyl layers that offer the self-healing effect. While many people choose tough, robust plastic, many will look for self-healing options. Both, of course, are built to ensure that you get the most durability and longevity from your projects over time.

Why Buy a Cutting Mat?

A cutting mat is a crucial accessory for anyone likely to work with craft knives and other sharp tools. Mats will give you essential stability while working, to ensure that you don’t slip and injure yourself. What’s more, they will give you a lot of grip for any projects you may be working on.  Crucially, too, they will help to protect any surfaces you may be working on top of. The last thing you will want to do is scratch or seriously damage your kitchen or bedroom work surfaces!

Therefore, regardless of how they are made, cutting mats are a great asset to any craftsperson, or to anyone likely to get busy with sharp cutting implements regularly!

There are thousands of fun crafts you can do with a cutting mat. Why not grab your family and make something together. Safe, fun and a memory that’ll last forever.
